Relating to Music…

So today I was driving down the road in this company van that had a popular radio station on from the previous occupant when this song came on: Kesha- Praying. Here are the lyrics:

Well, you almost had me fooled
Told me that I was nothing without you
Oh, but after everything you’ve done
I can thank you for how strong I have become

‘Cause you brought the flames and you put me through hell
I had to learn how to fight for myself
And we both know all the truth I could tell
I’ll just say this is “I wish you farewell”

I hope you’re somewhere prayin’, prayin’
I hope your soul is changin’, changin’
I hope you find your peace
Falling on your knees, prayin’

I’m proud of who I am
No more monsters, I can breathe again
And you said that I was done
Well, you were wrong and now the best is yet to come
‘Cause I can make it on my own
And I don’t need you, I found a strength I’ve never known
I’ll bring thunder, I’ll bring rain, oh
When I’m finished, they won’t even know your name

You brought the flames and you put me through hell
I had to learn how to fight for myself
And we both know all the truth I could tell
I’ll just say this is “I wish you farewell”

I hope you’re somewhere prayin’, prayin’
I hope your soul is changin’, changin’
I hope you find your peace
Falling on your knees, prayin’

Oh, sometimes, I pray for you at night
Someday, maybe you’ll see the light
Oh, some say, in life, you’re gonna get what you give
But some things only God can forgive

I hope you’re somewhere prayin’, prayin’
I hope your soul is changin’, changin’
I hope you find your peace
Falling on your knees, prayin’

I was jamming out while this played and was surprised by how much I relate to it. It’s a perfect balance of how I feel about my ex now that I’m free. There are hints in the lyrics about emotional abuse. Phrases about forgiveness from God (I can forgive, but that in no way means I would ever want him back in my life). “We both know all the truth I could tell.” Oh, that’s definitely true as I plan to write a book one day, haha. I do hope his soul changes so he stops perping on kids! I know, a little less radical than others I hear wanting death penalties, etc. for those types of perps, but really, it’s a relatable song. I have learned the importance of music, especially during those times in life when you just want to give up. You can listen to sad sappy music or you can listen to things that are going to pick you up and help you move forward. Music really can affect our moods; it’s almost creepy mind control. Anyway, I guess the purpose of this post is simply to share this song that evoked a lot of emotions for me, and I thank the writers… and honestly, before this, I couldn’t name a single song Kesha has done, so I’m glad I stumbled upon it.

Hurtful truth: Sometimes someone else knows you better than yourself.
